Wonder Reborn

Event Details

My Savior, thou, thou art that light,
Which to the nations shall shine also …
Thy light all darkness doth consume,
The gloomy night to day transform.
—J.S. Bach, Christmas Oratorio, Cantata V

In the dark of winter, and in a single evening, experience two choral masterworks that dramatise the birth of Christ.

As Part I of Handel's Messiah comes to a close, the events leading up to the birth in the manger have been recounted. The ultimate immortality of Christ's teachings—"and he shall reign for ever and ever"—is celebrated in the "Hallelujah Chorus" drawn from Part II.

The fifth of the six episodes of Bach's Christmas Oratorio focuses on the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem, as the guidepost to the newborn child's location, and as a metaphor for his destiny.

An unusual feature of this concert is that the Handel work will be performed without conductor and the choir will be singing from memory. "It is challenges such as this that make NEC such an unusual, fantastic, and exciting place to be," says choral director Erica Washburn.
