Description

Marylou Ferrante and Robin O'Herin, American Traditional musicians, explore the important role that women played in creating and performing music in early 20th century America.

Event Details

Women musicians were deeply vested in American Traditional music, holding an important place in American history due to their technical skill on their instruments, their original songs–which still endure, and their fight as women to take their rightful place in American music. Songs covered will range from old-time music played on banjo, guitar, mandolin and ukulele, to Piedmont and Delta Blues, as well as gospel and ragtime. Blues and gospel women such as Memphis Minnie, Ma Rainey and Sister Rosetta Tharpe will be presented as well as that of traditional musicians like Maybelle & Sarah Carter, Ola Belle Reed, Cousin Emmy, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard. Slide guitar and blues mandolin workshops will be offered before the concert!
