From the Greek island of Crete, composer Stelios Petrakis is a virtuosic lyra (three-stringed fiddle) player and a leading figure in the lively Greek roots music scene. His quartet, a string band with laouto (lute or oud), mandolin, and cello, plays a mix of traditional pieces and his own traditionally inspired compositions that range from slow, plaintive, instrumental melodies to quick-fingered, breakneck dance tunes.
