Description

Arneis explores pieces exploring innovative uses of sounds from the past in works by Soo Yeon Lyuh and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Event Details

This program was originally curated by Arneis cellist Agnes Kim for the quartet’s 10th anniversary season in 2019-20 and we’re excited to finally present it this spring! The program opens with Soo Yeon Lyuh’s Yessori (옛소리, “sound from the past”), a piece that explores aspects of traditional Korean music and expands the color palette of the instruments of the string quartet in the process. Much of Beethoven’s music can be described as simultaneously looking backwards and forwards, rooted in the contrapuntal origins of Western music while pushing those rules to their limit. His revolutionary String Quartet in Bb major, Op. 130, in its original iteration ending with the Grosse Fuge, is one of the clearest examples of this, using sounds of the past to push the string quartet into the future.
